Praseodymium is a metallic element, atomic number 59, belongs to rare earth metal. The element name comes from the Greek word meaning "green". The crystal structure of the cell is hexagonal. Praseodymium is more resistant to corrosion in air than lanthanum, cerium, neodymium and europium, but exposure to air produces a fragile layer of green oxide, and pure praseodymium must be stored in mineral oil or sealed plastic. One of the uses of praseodymium is in catalytic cracking of petroleum. The activity, selectivity and stability of petroleum cracking catalysts were improved by adding Y zeolite in the form of praseodymium neodymium. Praseodymium, like other rare earth elements, has chronic low toxicity and is not a necessary element for biology.

Praseodymium can be used as catalyst in petrochemical industry. [1]

As a rare earth element with a large amount, praseodymium is largely used in the form of mixed rare earth, such as purifying and metamorphic agent of metal materials, chemical catalyst, agricultural rare earth and so on. The activity, selectivity and stability of petroleum cracking catalysts were improved by adding Y zeolite in the form of praseodymium neodymium. The wear resistance of PTFE can be improved by adding praseodymium and neodymium into PTFE as plastic modification additive.

Rare earth permanent magnet material is the most popular rare earth application field. Praseodymium alone is not outstanding as a permanent magnet material, but it is an excellent co-element that can improve magnetic properties. No matter the first generation of rare earth permanent magnet material samarium cobalt permanent magnet alloy, or the third generation of rare earth permanent magnet material ndFeb, adding appropriate amount of praseodymium can effectively improve and improve the performance of permanent magnet material. For example, adding part of Pr to SmCo5 to replace Sm can improve the magnetic energy product of permanent magnet materials, the proportion of which is generally 80% sm-20% Pr. If praseodymium is added too much, the coercivity and stability of the materials will be reduced. In the third generation of rare earth permanent magnet NdFeb, praseodymium can be added to improve the coercivity of the material. Germany, Japan and other countries add part of praseodymium when producing high coercivity ndFeb magnets. The addition amount of praseodymium is 5% ~ 8%, up to 10%, which can replace 1/3 of neodymium. The quality of magnetic materials for praseodymium is higher, at least should reach the same quality as neodymium. Adding praseodymium can also improve the oxidation resistance (air corrosion resistance) and mechanical properties of magnets, which has been widely used in various electronic devices and motors.

Praseodymium can also be used in grinding and polishing materials. Pure cerium based polishing powder is usually light yellow, is a high quality polishing material for optical glass, has replaced the low polishing efficiency and pollution of the production environment of iron oxide red powder. Neodymium oxide has little effect on polishing, but praseodymium has good polishing properties. Rare earth polishing powder containing praseodymium will be reddish brown, also known as red powder, but this red is not iron oxide red, but because of the inclusion of praseodymium oxide to make rare earth polishing powder dark color. Praseodymium is also made into a new grinding material containing praseodymium corundum grinding wheel. Compared with white corundum, in the grinding of carbon structural steel, stainless steel, superalloy, efficiency and durability can be increased by more than 30%. In order to reduce cost, praseodymium neodymium enriched material was used as raw material in the past, so called praseodymium neodymium corundum grinding wheel.

Praseodymium has been used more and more widely in the field of optical fiber. Praseodymium doped optical fiber amplifier (PDFA) has been developed to play an amplification role in the spectrum of 1300~1360nm, and the technology is becoming more mature. With its excellent performance and cost ratio, PDFA is of great practical significance to the construction, transformation and system upgrading of 1550nm CATV system in China. PDFA will fundamentally change the existing 1550nmCATV network pattern, making 1310nmCATV system is the ideal choice to replace 1550nm system in the transformation of HFC system.

Preparation method edit broadcast

Industrial separation and purification of praseodymium from mixed rare earth solutions obtained from treating bastnaite or monazite by solvent extraction and ion exchange. Praseodymium metal is prepared by reducing praseodymium fluoride or chloride with calcium. [1]

Light rare earth metals such as lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium and neodymium, due to their low melting point, can be fused out on the cathode during the electrolytic process, so electrolysis is generally adopted to obtain.

It is usually prepared by the dehydration of praseodymium PrCl3·xH2O and metal calcium reduction, or by the melting of anhydrous praseodymium chloride and electrolysis.

Praseodymium has low toxicity, safety protection should be paid attention to when contacting. [1] Pure praseodymium must be stored in mineral oil or sealed plastic
