Rhodium alloy refers to rhodium - based alloy with other elements. Commonly used rhodium alloys are Rh-Pt alloy, Rh-10Ru alloy and so on. Rh-10Ru alloy is peritectic microstructure alloy, which is characterized by high hardness, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance and catalytic activity. Under the protection of argon, alumina crucible was used to melt in high frequency induction furnace, and water cooled copper was cast. The cold working performance of the ingot is poor, and it can be processed at 1450ºC. Catalyst and electrical contact material for blaster.

The properties of platinum-rhodium alloy change regularly with the increase of rhodium content:

(3) With the increase of resistivity, the resistance temperature coefficient decreases.

(4) The thermoelectric potential and its stability increase, but the stability decreases when the alloy is polluted.

(5) Rhodium can reduce the volatilization loss of platinum in the alloy when heated in high temperature oxidation atmosphere.

(6) Enhanced acid corrosion resistance, alloy containing more than 20% rhodium is insoluble in aqua regia.

(7) platinum-rhodium alloy has high catalytic activity.

(8) platinum-rhodium alloys are generally easy to work, but high rhodium alloys have low plasticity, so hot working billet is required [2].

High melting point, excellent chemical, mechanical and thermoelectric stability as well as high catalytic activity, determine that platinum-rhodium alloys are more widespread and important than any other noble metal alloys for industrial applications. Mainly used for:

(1) thermocouple manufacturing. PtRh10/Pt thermocouple is the most accurate temperature measurement above 300ºC, is also 630.74 ~ 1064.43ºC in the temperature area of the international temperature benchmark, generally measured temperature up to 1350ºC(short time up to 1600ºC); PtRh30/PtRh6, PtRh13/Pt, PtRh20/PtRh5, PtRh40/PtRh20 and other thermocouples can measure higher temperatures.

(2) in the glass industry, it is used to make crucible, leakage plate, agitator, electrode and other heat resistant and corrosion resistant devices.

(3) as a catalyst in ammonia oxidation and many other reactions.

(4) as a high temperature heating body, in which the furnace with PtRh40 alloy as heating body can work in the oxidation atmosphere to 1800ºC.

(5) In the instrument industry used as electrical contacts, spark plug electrode and potentiometer winding material.

Typical platinum-rhodium alloys are PtRh3.5, PtRh7, PtRh10, PtRh25 and PtRh40, where PtRh10 is called the "standard alloy",
 

Rhodium is a rare precious metal. It is a silver-white metal with a hardness of 4~4.5 and a relative density of 12.41. The high melting point is 1966ºC. The main valence of stable chemical properties are +2, +4 and +6. The first ionization energy is 7.46eV. It is also resistant to most common acids (including aqua regia) at moderate temperatures. At 200-600ºC, it can react with hot concentrated sulfuric acid, hot hydrobromic acid, sodium hypochlorite and free halogen. Does not react with many molten metals, such as gold, silver, sodium and potassium, and molten bases. Platinum group metals have high melting point, high strength, stable electrothermal property, high electrical spark loss resistance, excellent corrosion resistance, high temperature oxidation resistance, good catalytic activity, widely used in automobile exhaust purification, chemical industry, aerospace, glass fiber, electronics and electrical industry and other fields, although the consumption is small, but plays a key role, known as "industrial vitamins".

In addition to alloys, rhodium can be used as a bright, hard coating on other metals, for example, silver or camera parts. The rhodium evaporates onto the surface of the glass, forming a thin layer of wax that produces a particularly good mirror.

(1) High catalytic activity and selectivity, long life. Rhodium and its alloys, rhodium-containing compounds, complex catalysts can be used for aldehydes and acetic acid, automobile exhaust gas purification,  production of ammonia oxidation, plastics, artificial fibers, drugs, pesticides and other organic chemical synthesis, fuel cell electrode.

(2) High and stable reflectance to visible light. It is often used as coating of reflection surface of special industrial mirror, searchlight, radar, etc.

(3) High melting point, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, is one of the most chemically stable metals. It can be used as corrosion resistant vessel, and can be used at high temperature of 1850ºC in the atmosphere. Pure rhodium crucible can be used for the production of calcium tungstate and lithium niobate single crystals.

(4) rhodium coating hardness is high (7500 ~ 9000MPa), wear resistance, corrosion resistance, stable contact resistance. Rhodium plated composite material is an excellent electrical contact material, rhodium can also be used for jewelry and other industrial instruments, gas sensitive components of the plating.

(5) modification effect. Rhodium can form a solid solution with platinum, palladium and other metals, which plays a solid solution strengthening effect on the matrix, improves the melting point of the matrix, recrystallization temperature and corrosion resistance, and reduces the loss of oxidation volatilization. Platinum-rhodium alloy is an excellent precious metal temperature measuring material. The compounds formed by rhodium and titanium, zirconium, hafnium, tantalum, niobium and other metals have dispersion strengthening effect on rhodium alloy and increase the thermal stability. Adding rhodium to iridium can improve the processing property of iridium.

(6) High work hardening rate, hot processing into a certain size can be cold processing.

(7) Expensive, except for special use, usually only as an added element.
