forging
Heat to 1150°C and maintain until the temperature is uniform across the section. Soaking time at forging temperature should be as short as possible to avoid large amounts of scaling and excessive grain growth. This will vary with furnace conditions, but 25 minutes for every 15 mm section can be used as a guide. Never forge below 850 oC.
After forging, the workpiece should be cooled as slowly as possible in sand or dry lime, etc.
Note: Surface hardened steel is less likely to crack than medium or high carbon steel due to its low carbon content and therefore can be heated and cooled more quickly.
