Osmium is the Group VIII element of the sixth cycle of the periodic table, element symbol Os, atomic number 76, relative atomic mass 190.23, belonging to the heavy platinum group metal, which is the largest known density metal. [1]

Osmium is found in the mineral osmiridium. The solid containing osmium is roasted in the air, the volatilized osmium tetroxide is absorbed by alcohol alkali solution, and then osmate is obtained by hydrogen reduction to produce metal osmium. It can be used to make super-hard alloys. An alloy of rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, or platinum, often used as bearings in record players, fountain nibs, and clocks and instruments.

Osmium is a platinum element [2]. Platinum elements exist almost completely in elemental state and are highly dispersed in various ores. Such as original platinum ore, nickel sulfide copper ore, magnetite and so on. Platinum elements almost without exception exist together to form natural alloys. In the minerals containing platinum series elements, platinum is usually the main component, while the rest of the platinum series elements must be found through chemical analysis because of their small content. Since osmium, iridium, palladium, rhodium, and ruthenium all form ores with platinum, they are all found in the residue after platinum has been extracted from platinum mines. The chemical properties of platinum series elements are stable. Except platinum and palladium, they are not only insoluble in ordinary acids, but also insoluble in aqua regia. Platinum is very soluble in aqua regia, palladium is also soluble in hot  All elements of the platinum series have a strong tendency to form coordination compounds.
 

Osmium use
